How to treat horse arthritis?
About three weeks ago, my ten year old horse was diagnosed with arthritis in his front left and rear knees. For his entire life, he has had a front left pigeon toed foot that has been over-corrected and, most likely, caused this arthritis. At the moment, we are treating him with the cortisone shots. However, I ride top speed drills on horseback weekly and it is very hard to miss. He is my only horse and he is amazing what he can do, so changing horses is almost not possible. In the past two weeks, he seems to have hit a wall, he is in so much pain he bucks all the time and my dad and I are completely stuck. Please help me! What are some possible treatments or methods or solutions I could try?
Bute might help but he may develop stomach problems from being on it long term. All day turnout and joint supplements can also help keep the joint as limber as possible. It sounds like you will need to consider a new horse soon. Once arthritis starts it only gets worse. Sorry…
